US has more Democrats than Republicans

Gallup Poll: "In the eight national polls Gallup conducted in the first quarter of 2006, an average of 33% of Americans identified as Democrats, while 32% identified as Republicans and 34% as independents."
However, more Americans "have identified as Democrats than Republicans in each of the last four quarters, although in each case the advantage was small -- from less than one percentage point to three points.
The small but meaningful change observed during recent quarters is due to a gain in independent identification and a decline in Republican identification."

Bill Frist is Running For President

"Terrible, terrible, terrible, terrible."
-- Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TN), quoted by the AP, describing how his "all but certain" presidential campaign would be if he ran for re-election this year.

Karl Rove Admits Bush is a Liar!

The National Journal: "Karl Rove, President Bush's chief political adviser, cautioned other White House aides in the summer of 2003 that Bush's 2004 re-election prospects would be severely damaged if it was publicly disclosed that he had been personally warned that a key rationale for going to war had been challenged within the administration.

"Said one senior government official: "The mission was to insulate the president. It was about making it appear that he wasn't in the know."
Said another Bush appointee: "This was about getting past the election."

Lie, cheat, steal, whatever it takes to get elected...........

Questions about Iraq

1. How does sending our troops to Iraq, separating them form their families and loved ones, putting them in harm's way, and keeping them there equal "supporting the troops"?

2. Why do those who claim to "honor their sacrifices" want them to continue sacrificing?

3. Why don't those who bloviate about "supporting" and "honoring" the troops against an enemy they think threatens Western civilization actually, you know, put on combat boots and join them?

John McCain Loves Jerry Falwell

Republican John McCain gives some love to the crazy Reverend:
American military hero and Arizona Sen. John McCain will deliver the Commencement message at Liberty University on May 13, at 9:30 a.m., in the Liberty University Vines Center.
While Sen. McCain and Liberty University Chancellor Jerry Falwell have had their share of political differences through the years, the two men share a common respect for each other and have become good friends in their efforts to preserve what they see as common values. This will mark his first ever appearance at Liberty University.

Why is the media always referring to McCain as a moderate?
At least call him for the right winger that he is.

Sen. McCain: Do you agree with Jerry Falwell that Muhammed, the prophet is Islam, is a "terrorist"?

FEC won't regulate most political activity

WASHINGTON - The Federal Election Commission decided Monday to exempt virtually all political activity on the Internet from the nation’s new campaign finance law.
In a 6-0 vote, the commission decided to regulate only paid political ads placed on another person’s Web site.
The decision means that bloggers and online publications will not be covered by provisions of the new election law. Internet bloggers and individuals will therefore be able to use the Internet to attack or support federal candidates without running afoul of campaign spending limits.“It’s a win, win, win,” Commissioner Ellen L. Weintraub said, adding that the rule would satisfy concerns of campaigns, individuals and the Internet community about whether the campaign finance law applies to Internet political activity.
The commission was forced to act after a federal court ruled that the FEC must extend some of the new campaign financial and spending limits to political activity on the Internet.

Hillary Clinton Has Big Staff For 2006 Senate race

Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) "won't say if she's running for the White House -- but she's already drafted a presidential-size army of campaign staffers that dwarfs John McCain's outfit and those of everyone else in the field," according to the New York Post.
"Clinton has assembled a Titanic-size troop of 37 staffers and a legion of pricey consultants on the rolls of her HillPAC political-action committee and her Friends of Hillary re-election campaign -- operatives that come on top of the three dozen aides in her Senate office."
Meanwhile, an interesting New York Times piece on Clinton's Senate re-election campaign notes she's "aiming both to run up a big margin of victory across New York State and to exceed expectations in Republican strongholds."

Iraq police find 30 corpses, most beheaded

"Police found 30 corpses, most beheaded, near a village north of the capital Sunday night, in the latest wave of sectarian killings engulfing Iraq. At least 16 people were killed during a clash involving U.S. forces at a Shiite mosque in Baghdad.
Elsewhere in the capital, American troops raided an Interior Ministry building on Sunday and briefly detained about 10 Iraqi policemen after discovering 17 Sudanese prisoners in the facility, Iraqi authorities said.
The short-lived raid was reminiscent of a U.S. raid last November that found detainees apparently tortured, but in this case the Americans quickly determined the Sudanese were being legitimately held and had not been abused, said Maj. Gen. Ali Ghalib, a deputy interior minister. The U.S. military command here had no immediate comment on the report".

The war is going great! Victory is near, the people of Iraq are free! Saddam Hussein is on trial, and he will soon be convicted.
Same old rhetoric, nothing has changed.
Reality sucks, doesn't it?

GOP Runs From Bush

The Philadelphia Inquirer: "President Bush is coming to Pennsylvania today to help Republican Sen. Rick Santorum in his reelection fight. But unless you're invited to the Sewickley Heights home of Pittsburgh-area industrialist Richard P. Simmons, you won't see them together."While Bush is very unpopular in Pennsylvania, "the senator recognizes that Bush can deliver a commodity that is more tangible than star power: campaign cash."Washington Wire: "Senate candidates DeWine of Ohio, Kennedy of Minnesota and Steele of Maryland avoid appearances with Bush."

FOX News Gets Fucked!

The latest White House talking point on Iraq is that the media is systematically ignoring the “good news” about the war. Secretary Rumsfeld has led the charge, and right-wing bloggers are serving as an echo chamber. Last night, Newsweek’s Richard Wolffe explained what’s going on:
At a time when…conservatives in general are feeling very disillusioned about the war and about their president, you’ve got to find something to rally around. Beating up the media is one of those.
So far, the public isn’t buying the spin: 60 percent of Americans believe that the media are reporting events in Iraq either accurately or better than they really are. And they’re right.
Eyewitness accounts both by the Bush administration and by journalists on the ground back up the media’s perspective of the chaos and refute the right-wing’s claims of journalistic neglect:
State Department Human Rights Practices report on Iraq, 3/8/06:
[A] climate of extreme violence in which people were killed for political and other reasons. … Bombings, executions, killings, kidnappings, shootings, and intimidation were a daily occurrence throughout all regions and sectors of society. An illustrative list of these attacks, even a highly selective one, could scarcely reflect the broad dimension of the violence. expand post »
U.S. Agency for International Development report on Iraq, 1/2/06:
Former regime elements, foreign fighters and Islamic extremists continue to conduct terrorist attacks with devastating effect upon Iraqi civilians.
NBC reporter, Richard Engel, “the only television news correspondent to cover the entire war in Iraq for an American television network from Baghdad,” 3/22/06:
I think the security problem is the overall story and most Iraqi’s I speak to say — actually most reporters get it wrong — it’s the situation on the ground is actually worse than the images we project on television.

Roberts Radical Views Come Out

"The centuries of special protection for the privacy of the home are over."--Supreme Court Justice David Souter, writing for the majority in Georgia v. Randolph, on what would happen if the dissenting views of Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas were enacted.

Scalitio is with these pigs now, let's hope Kennedy does the right thing, and keeps joining Souter and Stevens on the court.

Hillary Clinton Takes Charge!

After being surprised by her husband's role in the Dubai ports deal, Sen. Hillary Clinton has insisted that Bill Clinton give her "final say" over what he says and does, well-placed sources said.
The former President agreed to give his wife a veto to avoid his habit of making controversial headlines that could hurt her chances of returning to the White House, multiple sources told the Daily News.

Is Conrad Burns Dropping Out in Montana?

"Rumors are swirling around Montana political circles" that Sen. Conrad Burns (R-MT) "might drop out" of the U.S. Senate race before Thursday's filing deadline, the Helena Independent Record reports. If Burns drops out of the race, either Rep. Denny Rehberg (R-MT) or former Gov. Marc Racicot (R) "would instantly hold big leads over the top two Democrats against whom Burns is struggling," a new Rasmussen Reports poll finds.

SEN. BURNS: STAY IN THE RACE!!! We need this asshole to stay in so we can get this seat in November.

Operation Swarmer: A PR Move

From Time Magazine:
Four Black Hawk helicopters landed in a wheat field and dropped off a television crew, three photographers, three print reporters and three Iraqi government officials right into the middle of Operation Swarmer. Iraqi soldiers in newly painted humvees, green and red Iraqi flags stenciled on the tailgates, had just finished searching the farm populated by a half-dozen skinny cows and a woman kneading freshly risen dough and slapping it to the walls of a mud oven.
The press, flown in from Baghdad to this agricultural gridiron northeast of Samarra, huddled around the Iraqi officials and U.S. Army commanders who explained that the "largest air assault since 2003" in Iraq using over 50 helicopters to put 1500 Iraqi and U.S. troops on the ground had netted 48 suspected insurgents, 17 of which had already been cleared and released. The area, explained the officials, has long been suspected of being used as a base for insurgents operating in and around Samarra, the city north of Baghdad where the bombing of a sacred shrine recently sparked a wave of sectarian violence.
But contrary to what many many television networks erroneously reported, the operation was by no means the largest use of airpower since the start of the war. ("Air Assault" is a military term that refers specifically to transporting troops into an area.) In fact, there were no airstrikes and no leading insurgents were nabbed in an operation that some skeptical military analysts described as little more than a photo op. What’s more, there were no shots fired at all and the units had met no resistance, said the U.S. and Iraqi commanders.
The operation, which doubled the population of the flat farmland in one single airlift, was initiated by intelligence from Iraq security forces, says Lt Col Skip Johnson commander of the 187 Battallion, 3rd Combat Brigade of the 101st Airborne. "They have the lead," he said to reporters at the second stop of the tour. But by Friday afternoon, the major targets seemed to have slipped through their fingers. Iraqi Army General Abdul Jabar says that Samarra-based insurgent leader Hamad el Taki of Mohammad’s Army was thought to be in the area, and Iraqi intelligence officers were still working to compare known voice recordings and photographs with the prisoners in custody.
With the Interior Ministry's Samarra commando battalion, the soldiers had found some 300 individual pieces of weaponry like mortars, rockets and plastic explosives in six different locations inside the sparsely populated farming community of over 50 square miles and about 1,500 residents. The raids also uncovered high-powered cordless telephones used as detonators in homemade bombs, medical supplies and insurgent training manuals.
Before loading up into the helicopters for a return trip to Baghdad, Iraqi and American soldiers and some reporters helped themselves to the woman’s freshly baked bread, tearing bits off and chewing it as they wandered among the cows. For most of them, it was the only thing worthwhile they’d found all day.

What a fucking waste of time! No shots fired or insurgents captured- a complete debacle like many others. A cheap trick to improve President Bush's numbers in the polls. Is this what we are paying for everyday? BS

Budget Bill In Danger of Failing

According to CBS News, four Republicans -- Mike DeWine and George Voinovich of Ohio, Norm Coleman of Minnesota and Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island -- "have declared their opposition to it. Two more GOP defections would sink the budget, assuming every Democrat and Independent Vermont Sen. Jim Jeffords vote against it. Specter said Tuesday he might vote ‘nay’ even if his amendment boosting education and health research is adopted.”

This is the best thing that could happen for the abysmal budget. Not to mention taking the ANWR drilling resolution out as well. The only reason Republicans are voting No is to save their butts back in their home states.

Conservatives Angry With Boehner

"Conservatives expressed deep disappointment Wednesday following a procedural vote on a $91.8 billion spending bill to pay for military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan and Hurricane Katrina recovery. They had hoped to offset the new spending with unused government funds, but GOP leaders blocked the plan."
"On his first big vote since being elected majority leader, Boehner avoided embarrassment when the GOP won, 218-200. But in the process, 29 conservative Republican Study Committee members bucked their party leadership, and according to several Capitol Hill aides who spoke to HUMAN EVENTS, those members are very much displeased with Boehner."
"'He cut off the hand that fed him,' lamented one senior House aide, referring to the support conservatives gave Boehner last month when he won his post as GOP leader."

Iraq Parliament Meets For 30 Minutes!

The long-expected first session, which took place within days of the third anniversary of the U.S.-led invasion, lasted just over 30 minutes and was adjourned indefinitely because the legislature still has no speaker.
Adnan Pachachi, the senior politician who administered the oath in the absence of a speaker, spoke of a country in crisis.
"We have to prove to the world that a civil war is not and will not take place among our people," Pachachi told lawmakers. "The danger is still looming and the enemies are ready for us because they do not like to see a united, strong, stable Iraq."
Source: Yahoo News

30 Minutes? Is that even called a meeting? How sad and pathetic, those fools are nothing without the US to protect their asses. The civil war has already started and those politicians will run like hell when more people start getting killed. Puppet Government!

Americans Favor Censuring Bush

An American Research Group survey finds that 46% of Americans favor censuring President Bush "for authorizing wiretaps of Americans within the United States without obtaining court orders," while 44% oppose the move.
Interestingly, 42% of Americans favor Bush's impeachment by the House of Representatives, while 49% oppose it.Pollster Dick Bennett emails: "Respondents view censure and impeachment differently as 21% of those who favor censure oppose impeachment, while 12% of those who oppose censure favor impeachment. Also, 29% of Republicans favor censure, but only 18% of Republicans favor impeachment."

-- If the people support censure, we should do it! Now if only the Democrats can step up to the plate and do the right thing.

Republicans Block New Security Scrutiny

Republicans blocked a Democratic effort Wednesday to force House votes on expanding government scrutiny of foreign investments, the latest fallout from a Dubai-owned company's failed bid to run some U.S. port operations.
In a 224-192 procedural vote, the Republican-controlled House thwarted Democrats from offering two amendments to a $91 billion measure for wars and hurricane recovery. Democrats also planned to push for more port security money while criticizing Republicans on the issue.
"If the Republicans are now deciding to get on board, then we welcome them, because for so long they have been on a sinking ship, basically saying that our ports are secure," said Rep. Bennie Thompson of Mississippi, lead Democrat on the House Homeland Security Committee.

--The Republicans and national security, what a abysmal combination. It's pitful considering they just lost big on the Dubai ports scandal. Those lazy assholes don't give a shit about anyone except for those who contribute to their campaign accounts.

Democrats Have Big Leads for 2006 Elections

Here's to hoping for big gains this November for Democreats:
The latest CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll finds Democrats leading Republicans 55% to 39% among registered voters in the generic congressional ballot. "This is the largest lead Democrats have held over Republicans in the 2006 campaign thus far, and the largest lead Democrats have enjoyed among registered voters in a midterm election since 1982."

The Democrats' current lead of 16 percentage points in the Mar. 10-12 poll is slightly higher than a 14-point lead (53% to 39%) in the Feb. 28-Mar. 1 poll and a 12-point lead last August. In several polls between October and early February, the Democratic lead among registered voters was in single digits, which would suggest a fairly competitive election if likely voter models were applied.

The Crazy Feds: FBI spied on Pittsburgh pacifists

PITTSBURGH (Reuters) - FBI anti-terrorism agents spied on a peace group simply because it opposed the Iraq war, part of an "unprecedented campaign" to spy on innocent citizens, the American Civil Liberties Union said on Tuesday.
FBI documents acquired under the Freedom of Information Act and provided to reporters show the FBI conducted surveillance of the Pittsburgh-based Thomas Merton Center for Peace & Justice at anti-war demonstrations and leaflet distributions in 2002 and 2003.
One of the FBI documents, unveiled at a news conference by the two groups, carried the headline "International Terrorism Matters" and referred to the FBI's work with an anti-terrorism task force that includes several agencies.
Another FBI document said the Pittsburgh Joint Terrorism Task Force had learned that "The Thomas Merton Center ... has been determined to be an organization which is opposed to the United States' war with Iraq."
A separate document noted, "One female leaflet distributor who appeared to be of Middle Eastern descent, inquired if (confidential source's name withheld) was an FBI agent. No other TMC participants appeared to be of Middle Eastern descent."
FBI officials in Pittsburgh said the bureau was engaged in legitimate investigations, and in one case dropped the probe upon determining a person photographed at one demonstration was not whom they were looking for.
"We had a legitimate purpose for being there," FBI special agent Bill Crowley said, referring to a November 2002 protest.
--I'm sure you had a legitimate reason for being there, just like you did when you spied on all those other people protesting against the war. This sounds like something that Putin, the Chinese, Iran, or Nixon would do. Not our "moral values" President.

NASA: Global Warming is REAL

MSNBC: Following two recent studies on changes to Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets, NASA is touting a survey that it says confirms climate warming is changing how much water remains locked in Earth's largest storehouses of ice and snow. In a press release for the survey, NASA directly tied the changes to warming and described the survey as the most comprehensive ever in both regions.

--This must be driving Republicans crazy. How dare reality be forced on them? What gives NASA the right to corroborate what everyone in the world has known for years? Finally, those gutless wimps admitted that global warming was real. Better late than never

War In Iraq: Scores of bodies found all over Baghdad

BAGHDAD, Iraq - "Police found the bodies of at least 87 people killed by execution-style shootings since Monday morning gruesome wave of apparent sectarian reprisal slayings, officials said Tuesday. The dead included at least 29 bodies stacked in a mass grave in an eastern Shiite neighborhood of Baghdad.
The bloodshed the second wave of mass killings in Iraq since bombers destroyed an important Shiite shrine last month followed weekend attacks in a teeming Shiite slum in which 58 people died and more than 200 were wounded".

NRSC goes after Harris, tries to find opponent for primary

"Florida state Senate President Tom Lee (R) dodged a question about whether the National Republican Senatorial Committee is recruiting him and “refused to rule out switching from his race for chief financial officer to enter the Senate fray,” reports the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. Lee was quoted as saying: "I would never say never."

-->Rep. Katherine Harris (R-FL), the current GOP candidate for U.S. Senate, remains under fire for her ties to questionable campaign contributions.

--Too little, too late. National Republicans knew Harris had problems in the race from the beginning. Eight months left until the midterms and is this the best they could do against Sen. Nelson who was looking weak in 2005. Have fun with Katherine Harris! GO Harris 2006!!!

Republican Moderates? Forget About It!

GOP and White House Near Deal on Spying
Support was building among Republicans and the White House on Tuesday for a proposal from several moderate senators that would give President Bush's controversial surveillance program the force of law, more than four years after he secretly initiated the program.

Apparently Olympia Snow, Mike DeWine, and Chuck Hagel are cosponsoring the Terrorist Surveillance Act of 2006. Isn't this fantastic? More spineless Republicans who are too afraid to confront the Bush administration on important issues. There are no Republican Moderates. Specter showed his true colors during the Roberts and Alito hearings, and now the rest of the so called moderates show how pitiful they are as well.

Harris NOT Dropping Out!

Despite several rumors throughout yesterday and today, Katherine Harris has vowed to stay in the Florida Senate Race. Good for her, getting beat in a landslide by Sen. Nelson will be great for her political career.

VA 2006: James Webb announces Senate bid

Former Navy Secretary James Webb formally declared his Democratic candidacy for the U Senate on Tuesday, characterizing incumbent George Allen as a cog in an extremist national Republican Party.

"The Republican Party of George W. Bush is not the Republican Party of Ronald Reagan," Webb said during a news conference in the General Assembly Building.

A Secretary of the Navy under Reagan, Webb criticized the GOP for moving to the "extreme" on social issues and espousing a foreign policy that is "an attempt to export our ideology at the point of a gun."Webb, then a Republican, served as Reagan's Navy secretary in 1987 and 1988. He said he voted for Allen and George W. Bush in 2000. Webb, 60, said he switched to the Democratic Party several years ago when he was writing a history book and was impressed with the Democratic Party's working-class traditions.

My take: Although I'm sure he would be a great senator, it would be better to let George Allen win this one. If Allen wins re-election, it gives him momentum to launch his presidential bid. Any Democrat liberal or moderate can trounce Allen in the general election in 2008 and take back the White House!!
